As a stay-at-home mom in the 70’s I took Adult Ed classes in drawing, decorating, and batik, and then I got my hands in clay, and they stayed there. After putting pottery aside after just a few years because of the demands of family, earning another degree, and a career, I returned 20 plus years later. I took many Recreation Department classes, and encountered an expanded range of tools and glazes. I enjoy both wheel throwing and hand building.
I grew up in the country, and plants and animals are the inspiration for much of my work. Although I do make some purely decorative pieces, most of my work is functional. I like to make pieces that people enjoy using, whether to pot a plant, hold yarn while knitting, or display earrings. Much of my work is designed for use in cooking and serving, and in that context my goal is to make pottery that highlights the beauty of prepared food and enhances the pleasure of eating.
